PRP Quick Facts
We all have platelets in our blood. PRP is 3-step procedure that involves having your blood:
- Drawn from your arm
- Placed into a machine that separates the platelets from the rest of your blood
- Re-injected into you (only the part of your blood that contains a high concentration of platelets)
Benefits include:
- Reduce wrinkles
- Plump up sagging skin
- Get rid of deep creases
- Improve one’s complexion
- Diminish acne scars
- Hair restoration by stimulating weakened hair follicles
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is an injectable treatment by which a person’s own blood is used. Platelets are vital in the process of tissue healing, and the growth of new cells. PRP thereby promotes collagen production, regenerates the skin tissue, and essentially re-energizes your cells into rejuvenating themselves. The release of growth factors amphiphiles the healing process. PRP softens fine lines and wrinkles, tightens the skin, and improves skin tone and texture.
The treatment of PRP involves a fraction of blood, collected or ‘drawn up’ from the individual patient into a syringe. The collected blood is then spun down in a special centrifuge to separate its components. The platelet rich plasma is then reinjected, and/or micro-needled back into the skin.
The PRP procedure is a straightforward and minimally invasive process. It begins with a blood draw, from which the platelet-rich plasma is prepared using a centrifuge. The treatment area is prepared, and the PRP solution is carefully injected or applied topically, depending on the specific treatment goals. The procedure is performed in a comfortable and controlled environment, ensuring your safety and comfort.
The growth factors and bioactive substances in PRP stimulate collagen production, enhance cellular turnover, and promote healing in the targeted areas. Over time, you may notice improvements in skin texture, tone, and elasticity, reduced hair loss, improved joint function, or enhanced tissue healing, depending on the area treated. Results may vary based on individual factors and the specific treatment performed.
How long is the procedure?
Typically, a PRP treatment takes between an hour or two to complete. This depends on if the PRP is administered through injections only, and/or micro-needled into the skin. This timeframe includes an additional 30 minutes for the blood to be drawn and spun in the centrifuge, and topical numbing to be applied.
Are PRP treatments safe?
Yes, PRP treatments are generally considered safe. Since PRP utilizes your body’s blood components, there is minimal risk of allergic reactions or adverse effects. During your consultation, our medical team will discuss the benefits and potential risks of PRP treatments and address your concerns.
How long do the results of PRP treatments last?
The duration of results from PRP treatments can vary depending on several factors, including the specific treatment area, individual healing capabilities, and lifestyle factors. Generally, PRP treatments stimulate tissue regeneration and collagen production, which can lead to long-lasting improvements. However, the natural aging process and external factors such as sun exposure and lifestyle choices can affect the longevity of results. Our medical team may recommend periodic maintenance treatments or a personalized skincare regimen to maintain optimal results. During your consultation, we will discuss the expected duration of effects and provide guidance on prolonging and maximizing the benefits of PRP treatments.
When will I begin to see results from a PRP treatment?
Generally, patients notice tightening and a more even tone to their skin in a week or two after PRP injections. These results continue to build for up to 6 months after treatment.
Is there any downtime associated with PRP?
There is no downtime associated PRP injections; However, after your treatment, your skin may be red. This is normal and to be expected. Redness usually lasts from one to 24 hours. You may also have a little swelling in some areas.
